The Air Conditioning System Installation Process, Step by Step

Installing a new air conditioner is one of the more significant home improvement projects a homeowner can undertake, and understanding what the process actually looks like makes it far less intimidating. Whether you’re replacing an aging system or installing AC in a home that’s never had it, knowing what to expect helps you plan accordingly and ask the right questions.

At Southern Air, our AC installation process is thorough, transparent, and designed to leave your home more comfortable than we found it. Here’s how it works from start to finish.

Step 1: The In-Home Assessment and Load Calculation

Before any equipment is ordered or scheduled, a Southern Air technician visits your home to perform a proper assessment. This is not a five-minute walk-through. We conduct a Manual J load calculation, which is an industry-standard method for determining exactly how much cooling capacity your home requires. It accounts for your square footage, ceiling height, insulation levels, window size and orientation, local climate, and other factors that affect how hard your system will need to work.

Installing the wrong size unit is one of the most common and costly mistakes in the HVAC industry. An oversized system cools quickly but shuts off before removing humidity from the air, leaving your home feeling clammy even when the temperature is technically correct. An undersized system runs constantly but never quite catches up. The load calculation takes the guesswork out of sizing and ensures you get a system that performs the way it should.

Step 2: Equipment Selection and Scheduling

Once we have the load calculation results, we’ll recommend equipment options that match your home’s needs at different price and efficiency tiers. We’ll explain the differences in plain language so you can make an informed choice. Higher-efficiency systems cost more upfront but deliver meaningful energy savings over time, which matters in a climate where AC runs for most of the year.

We’ll also confirm whether your existing ductwork is in good enough condition to support the new system. Leaky or undersized ducts will undercut the performance of even the best equipment. If duct work modifications are needed, we’ll discuss that as part of the project scope before anything is confirmed.

Step 3: Removing the Old System

On installation day, the first task is safely disconnecting and removing your existing AC equipment. This includes recovering any remaining refrigerant in accordance with EPA regulations, which must be done by a certified technician. The old condenser unit outside and the air handler or coil inside are both removed and disposed of properly. Our team works carefully to protect your home during this process.

Step 4: Installing the New Equipment

With the old system out, installation of the new equipment begins. The indoor components (air handler, coil, or furnace with an added coil depending on your system type) are set in place first. Refrigerant lines are run between the indoor and outdoor units. Electrical connections are made to bring power to both units and to connect the system to your thermostat. If you’re upgrading to a smart or programmable thermostat, this is the right time to make that change.

The outdoor condenser unit is positioned on a level pad and secured. Our technicians follow manufacturer specifications throughout to protect your warranty and ensure the equipment operates as designed. Nothing is rushed.

Step 5: Refrigerant Charging and System Testing

After the physical installation is complete, the system is evacuated (to remove moisture and air from the refrigerant lines) and then charged with the correct amount of refrigerant. This step is critical to system performance and efficiency. Too little or too much refrigerant affects how well the system cools, how efficiently it runs, and how long the compressor lasts.

We then power the system on and run a full performance test. We check supply and return air temperatures, verify airflow at every register, confirm that all electrical components are operating correctly, and make sure the thermostat is communicating with the system as expected. Any adjustments needed are made before we close out the job.

Step 6: Walkthrough and Handoff

Before we leave, we walk you through everything you need to know about your new system. That includes how to operate the thermostat, when to change your filter and what size to use, what to expect in terms of normal system sounds and behavior, and how to register your equipment warranty. We want you to feel confident operating your new system, not just handed a manual and left to figure it out.

We’ll also talk you through the value of a regular AC tune-up to keep your new system running at its best. Annual maintenance is the most reliable way to extend the life of your investment and catch small issues before they turn into expensive repairs.

How Long Does AC Installation Take?

A standard central air conditioner replacement typically takes four to eight hours from start to finish. More complex installations, such as those requiring ductwork modifications or electrical panel upgrades, may take longer or require a second visit. We’ll give you a realistic timeline during the assessment so you can plan your day accordingly. For homes in the New Orleans heat, we know that every hour without AC matters, and we work efficiently to get you comfortable as quickly as possible.
